This website heralds the formation of the new Rule of Law Committee – one established by lawyers (without New Zealand Law Society involvement) to do that which the NZLS will not do – protect the Rule of Law.
The new Rule of Law Committee champions these principles:
The NZLS is the statutory body charged both with representing lawyers and upholding the Rule of Law.
Recently, the society’s own longstanding Rule of Law Committee was quietly disbanded. That committee had been responsible for monitoring Rule of Law issues and assisting the profession in meeting its fundamental obligation to uphold the Rule of Law.
The NZLS also recently published its so-called “independent review panel” report - an even greater landmark in the society’s abdication of its duty to promote the Rule of Law. The report’s recommendations would devastate the independence and integrity of our legal profession.
Because the society has effectively buried its Rule of Law role, we instead will now fight for this vital cause.
